Album Review: Fatal Love - MONSTA X

Monsta X have had a busy year. All About Luv, one of the first all English albums from a K-Pop group, dropped on Valentine's day, Fantasia X dropped in June, Jooheon is hot off the heels of a fire mixtape, not the mention the array of soundtracks and solo activities the members have been involved in. So for them to make room to squeeze in yet another album full of 10 tracks, is a huge deal what's another big deal is the fact that this is literally one of the best K-Pop albums of the year. This album is a journey that tells the story of love, breakups, and fiery passion all neatly packed together.

This album opens with the title track, Love Killa, which sets a nice tone for the record. Full of sexy raps and a great dance-able beat, you're hooked in the moment this record starts. The music video also provides a lot of fun with each member taking on different movie characters. Gasoline (갈충) follows which provides a mixture of all different types of music. Monsta X themselves called it a little world tour in a song as it incorporates music from Sweden, Latin America, and North America. It's fun beat is intoxicating and gives a good continuation to the first track.

After the good intro we're given, we start leading up the climax of this record. Thriller, Guess Who, and Nobody Else provide some nice vocal lines that really encapsulate the sexy mood of this record. Nobody Else (which is the first song written by member, Hyungwon) is a particular stand out favorite. It's got a smooth instrumental and sweet melodies. It builds up to a final chorus with string instruments that sound straight from a movie. It's truly beautiful.

The climax of this record is encapsulated by 2 words: MIND. BLOWING. BEASTMODE comes first with it's hard beat that makes you wanna head-bang. Monsta X are really good at bringing the firs (it's why they're my favorite K-Pop group), but nothing prepares you for this track. Every time I hear it I still get surprised. The chorus has them saying "It don't matter we do it better," and they're right. Stand Together (대동단결) comes next and it's immediately opened with some sick raps. It's a great hip-hop track to lose your mind to. It's also insanely catchy which will go over well when crowds are allowed to form again.

The album then slows down in the final three tracks, Night View, Last Carnival, and soft guitar ballad, Sorry I'm Not Sorry. All of these provide a nice conclusion to the ride you got taken on. Night View's instrumentals are smooth and slow but provide a nice dance beat to dance under moonlight. Last Carnival starts off pretty eerie but turns into a nice song about a dance with someone you'll never see again. Sorry I'm Not Sorry closes the record allowing each member to showcase some vocal abilities.

Fatal Love is an album that tells a story with every track providing a great experience to the listener. They showcase all sides of themselves with their hard raps and smooth vocals to nice instrumentals and head-banging hits. It's addicting. Monsta X have been working hard all year and for them to drop an album like this only proves why they are one of the best K-Pop groups out there.
