Album Review: Gatcha! - LUCY

Lucy is a stand-out group on all fronts. They debuted last year and it was a strong debut into the k-pop world. Their indie-pop flair was certainly something that couldn't be missed. Their line-up that featured a violinist intrigued me so much and I became hooked instantly with their fun, summery, indie sound. It was so powerful to me in fact that they came second on my favorite debuts of 2020. And now, they are a staple to my playlist and top groups. If you ask me who my favorite k-band is chances are I will answer Lucy. So needless to say, I was so excited for this release of Gatcha! And as summer is days away, they truly released this EP at the best time.

Gatcha! spans 4 tracks but each one is as magical as the next one and it really doesn't feel like anything is missing. I Got U, the title track, is a chanty summer song. It has a nice acoustic melody that kicks into some fluttery guitars and a drumbeat that is perfect to stomp and clap along to. The chorus also has a nice violin melody provided by Yechan and strong, heavenly vocals from their lead singer Sangyeob. It's a song that is made for the summer and should be on your summer playlist. It's bright and fun and powerful. It's one of the top tracks of the year. Period.

The b-sides on this EP are just as incredible as the title track too. One by One has some 80s inspired drum beats and synths. It's a lowkey groove but it really builds to a strong chorus filled with synths that is just amazing. Buddy has some stadium rock influences. These soft verses build to this all-powerful chorus that features some chant-y vocals that bless your ears. It's a strong b-side and definitely one of my favorites off this EP. Wonder closes off the EP with Wonder. Yechan once again blesses us with some nice violin melodies (if you can't tell he's my bias). This song also features a strong bassline from Wonsang and it really carries the song. It closes off the EP beautifully.

Lucy is a group that needs to be on your radar. They prove time and time again that their music is supreme. Gatcha! is an album that features so many sounds and textures and they're really good at delivering on every front. If you haven't been blessed by this group yet, Gatcha! is a good place to start. Go forth and be blessed by sounds that are perfect for the summer.
