Album Review: Moodswings in This Order - DPR IAN

Sometimes there are albums where you don't realize how impactful they are going to be and then you listen to them and you have this big moment where you just go "Oh my god. This is a work of art." This is exactly how I felt when I turned on Moodswings in This Order by DPR IAN. IAN (real name, Christian Yu) is an Australian-Korean rapper, singer, producer, director, etc. you name it, and MiTO is his debut album. Hard to believe because quite frankly is a work of art.

Moodswings has a lot of inspiration from indie and r&b music and it's clear to see with the sultry vocals he delivers on top of these summer-y guitar notes. IAN takes you on a journey of love and heartbreak through the 8 tracks that make up this record and there's not a single low note. IAN delivers on every track with his vocals and production and it almost makes you addicted. Once you start this album, you can't stop.

MITO opens the record with this intense and dark electronic beat and harmony that sets the tone for what's to come. It's less than 2 minutes long but it's an incredible intro. Songs like So Beautiful and No Blueberries were songs that he had released prior to this record and they sit nicely in the middle of the tracklist. The former especially has this latin-esque guitar under these beautiful falsettos that make it a stand out among the tracklist. Dope Lovers and the title track, Nerves, are probably my favorite tracks off this record. These songs feel reminiscent of the indie music I was jamming to when I was like 15. Dope Lovers has this simple beat but incredible melody and harmony that gets stuck in your head. Nerves has these indie guitars and drums that set a nice groove. Scaredy Cat is an indie pop groove that has these simple guitar melodies. Welcome to The Show is another stand out and serves as the softest track on this record. IAN's vocals are at the strongest point here. No Silhouette finally closes out the record where he harmonizes with himself and a repetition of "this is the end" really closes out the record nicely.

Moodswings in This Order is an album that fell in my lap unexpectedly and I didn't think it would be as imapctful to me. But it's definitely up there in favorite records of the year so far. DPR IAN delivers indie grooves and artful vocals that just feel so pleasant and satisfying to listen to. This album is a work of art. And it's also in all English so there's no excuse for you not to listen to this beautiful art piece.
