Artist Discovery: Lacuna

If you've followed the blog this past week, you've seen a song discovery post from this band, Lacuna, and their song Dancing In The Rain (if you've missed it check it out here). This song set off an explosion of the mind and it made me become super entranced by this indie group. The sounds and aesthetic these guys made became intoxicating and now they're my next addiction. Below you'll find a run-down and see why Lacuna should belong in your playlist.

Who are Lacuna?

Lacuna is a four-piece indie-rock/pop group that consists of members who are all around the same age and sing about the things they like. Their lineup consists of Jang Kyungmin (vocals and guitar), Jung Minhyuk (guitarist), Kim Ho (bass), and Oh Isaac (drums). The band describes their music as, "warm-hearted love for excluded people. (x)" The music they create features dreamy soundscapes and melodies that are the epitome of their warm sound. They debuted in 2018 with the EP, Incompleteness Dream, and have released 2 other EPs and 1 single since then.

Below you will find a rundown of some of their standout tracks and musical moments!

Debut Release: Incompleteness Dream

This EP is a lo-fi, bedroom sound that showcases their juvenile sound. It's fun and soulful. The track Cannonball really personifies this sound the best. It's got glittery, indie guitars and a fun drum beat to vibe too. There are also the more atmospheric moments like Montauk and their self-titled song, Lacuna. These tracks are perfect for chilling out on summer nights. They've got Kyungmin's soulful vocals and dreamy guitar melodies to really drive it home. This whole EP is a beautiful, dreamy, and fun time for indie lovers.

Recent Release: Hello, Wonderland

This EP was said to be a conclusion to a chapter they have written through their discography thus far. Even though it is only their fourth release, you can see their maturity and how they've grown from their first EP. This album features the addicting Dancing In The Rain which has those magnificent vocal progressions from Kyungmin. But the beauty doesn't stop there. The Day Before I Met You and Hello, Wonderland continue the atmospheric and dreamy sound that they have featured in their songs so far. There's also the track Carnival that starts as a dreamy ballad then builds to a summer party, indie tune. This is an EP that should be on everyone's playlist.

An EP that introduces Lacuna the best: Garden

Garden features the sounds that were present on Incompleteness Dream (the lo-fi sound) while showing signs of where they were planning on going in Hello, Wonderland (the more mature indie sound). The opener, Carriage, immediately whisks you away with the wild guitars and heavy drums. It's a great way to take you into the story Lacuna was writing for this record. This is immediately followed by the equally fun and wild, Sloth. And if you're wanting the more dreamy sound, look no further than the tracks Flower, Bird, and Lake. Flower and Bird feature those wispy guitars and delicate vocals from Kyungmin. Flower also features an atmospheric synth that really hones in on the dreamy sound. This is all closed out with The Season of Orange that you think will end the story in a soulful and graceful way. In a way it does, but it really builds into this intense and heavy track that makes it perfect for an ending credits scene.

Favorite Song: Flower

Flower is the epitome of a tune that you can never get enough of. This song features psychedelic synths and soulful guitars that carry Kyungmin's soft and delicate vocals. This track builds and builds in a subtle yet satisfying way. Isaac's drums, in particular, really help carry this tune to this beautiful ending. Flower gives you something new to discover every time you listen. You'll find hidden melodies and guitar tracks that you didn't hear before. It's intoxicating so you might find yourself listening to it over and over again. If there's any track you listen to, let it be this one.
