Seventeen has been a band in my library for a really long time. There were a few songs I really enjoyed, most notably, Hit, but I never really gave them a time of day. But a couple weeks ago they really just hit different and I really wanted to stan (as if I needed to add more bands to my ults list). And since my school is a ten hour drive away from home, I decided to play their entire discography in an effort to stan. I've done this with other bands as well and it's proven successful, looking at you Monsta X and BTS, and this time had proven no different. So let's do a run down.
Seventeen is a 13 member boy group under Pledis entertainment. They debuted in 2015 with the track Adore U an subsequent EP 17 Carat. The 13 members are divided into sub units depending on their specialty; a hip hop team, a vocal team, and a performance team. Seventeen is a self-producing boy group because of their active participation in song writing and their performance. They are a powerhouse and I'm glad I can officially call myself a fan.
Here's a breakdown of what I enjoyed!
Favorite Song(s): Hit, Back It Up (Hip-hop team), Ah Yeah (Hip-hop team), Left and Right, OMG
The list of songs that stood out to me is endless. It's 33 songs long and I find myself listening to songs that didn't make it on the list. So needless to say narrowing down my faves was a very hard task. Hit, though, has that special place in my heart. The song goes hard and everything from the vocals and raps to choreography are absolute perfection. So that song takes the cake for my favorite song. But, Left and Right is a fun summer song that you can't not enjoy! And of course I am a big fan of their hip hop team and the songs they have done together. Back It Up specifically is such a hard ass track. I will head-bang to that track for eternity.
You can check out the video for Left and Right, their latest comeback, below! But I totally recommend the above tracks as well especially if you love to dance around!
Favorite Vocals: Say Yes (DK & Seungkwan)
This song gave me the biggest goosebumps the first time I heard it. I'm not a fan of ballads but this track hits so different. DK and Seungkwan's harmonies are some of the most beautiful I have heard. Their voices, alone, are very beautiful and then to put them together and then to put these beautiful strings on top of it, it's a recipe for perfection. I'm absolutely in love with this track.
Favorite Album: An Ode
I kind of went into this thinking that this album would be my favorite but the scale at which I love this album I certainly didn't expect. This album is packed full of jams that sometimes get me through my days. It's packed full of edm hits and slow burns that really just make me crazy. My favorite tracks, Hit and Back it up make this album a special treat. But there's also tracks like Fear and and Network Love that also stand out to me on this record. If you're a slow song type of person then there's the track 247 that's reminiscent of 90s r&b. This record honestly has everything. It's perfect from start to finish and it's probably one of my all time favorite k-pop records.
Check out the music video for Hit below and if you like this song then I totally recommend this record.
Overall Discography Rating: 8/10
No band's discography is perfect and I have yet to find a k-pop group that has a perfect discography. But my god do Seventeen come close. I found myself bopping along and getting goosebumps and all around just having a great time. It also made it more enjoyable when I knew they were the ones making their own music. So while there were definitely some songs I found not so good, overall, these guys make great music.
Final thoughts
Honestly just check these guys out. Their music is fun and it's bop worthy. I just love them so much. I'm so glad I took the chance. Stan Seventeen!
