In order to really succeed in the K-Pop industry, you really need to conform. While experimentation is allowed (especially now more than ever), you still need to follow trends and styles to be successful especially if you're a smaller group. For smaller groups, experimentation really isn't allowed because it could really make or break a career. But there are song groups who don't care about conforming at all and do their own thing anyway like OnlyOneOf.
OnlyOneOf is a 6-member group that debuted on May 18, 2019 by their label RSVP and 8D Creative. The group debuted with members: KB, Rie, Yoojung, Junji, Mill, Nine, and Love (who has since left the group). From the get-go, these boys have created their own style and followed their own trends. These boys were cursing, singing about lust, and really giving into their sex appeal. While at first it didn't take off, these boys eventually found success all while not conforming to K-Pop standards. OnlyOneOf are a group that really deserve the attention because of it. They're incredible performers, vocalists, and rappers and their songs are so unique on top of it all.
Below you can find some essential tracks to get you started on their discography.
Debut Song: Savanna
What a way to introduce yourself in the world of K-Pop. OnlyOneOf introduced themself by showing off what will become their signature R&B influenced sound. This song is full of melodic synths and low-key drum beats that transport you to another world. This is all on top of their heavenly voices that proudly declare that they don't give a sh*t what you think about them. It's other worldly and really shows you what you're getting into. It's a perfect introduction to OnlyOneOf.
Most Popular Song: libidO
It's easy to see why this song became their break out hit and shook everyone to the core. It's a song that demands your full attention from the get-go with it's dissonant synths and heavy drums. Then you have their voices and raps that are full of passion which fit perfectly with the lyrics they're singing. It's a song that oozes true sex appeal and there's no way of getting around it. Everything about this song is sexy from the title, to their vocals, to the choreography, and even the music video. It created shockwaves because it's a song that really has never been done before. But OnlyOneOf know how to handle themselves and they really know how to make a song like this so perfect.
Recent Comeback: skinz
If there's a song that could be dividing it's this one. skinz is definitely a gem in OnlyOneOf's discography because it's so unique. The song opens with this heavenly guitar that leads you on because you think it's going to go one way but then it distorts into this dissonant and atonal guitar that shocks you. As you listen more, it almost feels like the song has no harmony or rhythm which can cause a lot of mixed feelings for a listener. It's noise in the most basic sense. Most groups that are making noise music aren't making sounds like this which makes it stand out more. This song takes you on a journey that is so unexpected but glorious that you want to listen over and over again. It's not something that is public friendly for sure, but making songs that are divisive is the thing that these guys are good at. For me, this is their best song because of all of it. I definitely recommend giving this song a few listens if you don't like it the first time as it could be a grower.
Personal Favorite: Dora Maar
While skinz is my favorite track, Dora Maar definitely comes close to being on top. This is an OnlyOneOf signature song. Their vocals are the standout point here as they are soft, angelic, and other worldly as they carry you through this beautiful song. The synths are spacey and really transport you to their world. It's a song you can get lost in as it's so soft and sensual. It's got their R&B influence but they put a refreshing twist on it. Dora Maar is a work of art.
What Album to Start With: Produced by ( ), Pt. 2
There are many places to start in OnlyOneOf's discography but this one feels the most in-tune with their signature style. This single album features three songs that really showcase them well. The first two songs, blOOm and A sOng of ice&fire (the title track), have those spacey instrumentals that really take you to another world. The title track really takes it to another level though as it is more house-inspired so you can blast this at your chill party. The last song, Off Angel, is a beautiful ballad that features their powerful vocals. It's a great place to start so you can experience all their styles without being overwhelmed.
