Single Review: The First Statement - BM

BM (real name: Matthew Kim) is a King of K-pop of sorts. He's known for his un-idol-like personality where he's not afraid to say what he wants. He's also known as the leader of the Big Tiddy Committee. This is a group of boy idols who are known for their big chest. Musically, he's involved in one of the few co-ed groups, KARD. It's here where he shines as the main rapper, composer, and producer for the group. He's truly known in the K-Pop industry but his debut single, The First Statement, is really him shining and leaving his mark on the industry.

This single spans 3 tracks each of them showing a different side of himself. The lead song, 13Ivi, is an explosive, hip-hop track. The beat helps BM make a statement. It's noisy but it's not overdone. It fits his aggressive raps and his chorus vocals where he's practically yelling. This song features a nice flow from him. It's something that I'm used to hearing in KARD songs but in a solo context it's definitely nice to see he can carry his own. This song is also catchier than anything. You might find yourself singing that chorus nonstop.

The b-sides to this single are also as powerful as the title track. First, there's previously released, Broken Me, which is a very emo-esque track. Here we have him shining as a vocalist in the powerful chorus. It has its hip-hop flair, but for the most part, this is a very guitar-heavy track. Then, there's Body Movin. This track is dance-floor ready with its dance beat and BM really plays to his sex appeal here with its sexy lyrics. He really does well in a song like this as it fits well with his vocal tone and deeper voice that he has for his raps.

The First Statement is BM experimenting with different sounds and it all works. He features a nice rap flow in 13Ivi, emotional vocals in Broken Me, and some sex appeal in Body Movin. It's a great way to debut because it really shows his versatility. I hope to see him experiment with all these sounds in the future as he continues to grow in his own as a solo artist.
